Is anti-BDS group Sawtona impersonating Palestinians?

by Charlotte Silver, Electronic Intifada

Claiming to be a group of Palestinians opposed to the growing boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement in the US, an organization calling itself Sawtona – “our voice” in Arabic – has emerged over the last two months.

But the organization does not appear to be what it says it is.

The group first emerged at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) last month when faculty and students were meeting to discuss BDS and support for Palestinians.

It then popped up at City University of New York (CUNY), just ahead of today’s scheduled graduate student council vote on a resolution to boycott Israeli academic institutions.

The group claims to be a voice “from the ground” in Palestine that is dedicated to ending Israel’s occupation. But so far the only objective Sawtona has in fact pursued is to stop BDS, claiming it does more harm than good for Palestinians.

And some evidence – including fraudulent postings on Facebook – cast significant doubt on the group’s central claim that it is run by Palestinians.

Rather, the group would appear to be based in present-day Israel – not Palestinian cities in the occupied West Bank where people representing Sawtona claim to live.

Sawtona has emerged at a moment when Israel has greatly stepped up its efforts to sabotage and attack the BDS movement, including efforts to undermine it by Israeli intelligence agencies.

Bernie Sanders Gives Tepid/Measured Speech on Israeli/Palestinian Conflict (video and partial transcript)

by Scott Creighton

UPDATE: For comparison purposes, you can read the transcript of Donald Trump’s war-mongering, sycophantic pandering speech to AIPAC, here.

Bernie Sanders politely declined an invitation to speak at this year’s AIPAC convention in D.C. yesterday. The other presidential candidates went there and pandered to the Likudnik Lobby as if their professional lives depended on it, slandering everyone from Iran to Palestinian children “being taught to hate” the Jewish state for no other reason than… Muslims.

Bernie gave a lengthy stump speech in Utah then he gave a little press conference type address in which he delivered what he claims would have been his AIPAC speech. It is notable for a number of reasons but the most obvious is… he chose not to give it to the AIPAC crowd… which probably would have booed him off the stage if he gave it there or physically dragged him off the stage, exposing AIPAC and it’s rabid followers for what it and they really are.

So, was his decision to give this speech half a country away a decision he made in his best interests or in theirs? Hard too say. My guess is “both”

I have copied part of the transcript of his speech from his website and posted the full video below my comments.

It’s AIPAC Day in America!!!

by Scott Creighton

Do we have an American Canada Public Affairs Committee? Do we have an American Ireland Public Affairs Committee? An American Guam one? Nope.

But we do have American Israel Public Affairs Committee, known as AIPAC, and today all our presidential candidates save one are rushing over to D.C. to attend their annual conference to swear fealty and their undying love to and for everything Israel.

It has been rumored that Hillary Clinton has been missing from the campaign trail these past few days because she was crawling on her knees to the conference all the way from New York in order to prove her loyalty. That’s just a rumor, of course.

Historic Vote in House of Commons: ‘The Israeli government has lost the support of the House’

UPDATE: White House official supposedly said this: “The thing about Bibi is, he’s a chickenshit,”

UPDATE: Israeli president recently said “Israel is a sick society“, the guy is even a Likud party member.

(Absolutely stunning. This is a MUST READ. The British lower house of parliament, the House of Commons, voted by an overwhelming majority, 274 to 12, to recognize the state of Palestine alongside Israel back on Oct. 13th of this year. As stated in the following article, that vote followed a similar result in Swedish parliament and will probably help inspire the Spaniards to do the same. What is even more shocking is how the MPs debated the issue, bringing up things that websites like mine and activists like Chomsky and Finklestein and many others have been saying for decades. This statement was made in the House of Commons not a month ago in Britain:

“[Since] the triumph of military Zionism and the Likud-run governments we have seen a new barbarism in that country. We have seen it in the Lebanon invasion, in the attack on the Mavi Marmara and the flotilla, and, above all, in the three attacks on Gaza —Operation Protective Edge, Operation Pillars of Defence,Operation Cast Lead.. ” Labour MP for Hammersmith Andy Slaughter

Like I said, this is a must read. You won’t see this on Prison Planet that’s for sure)

‘The Israeli government has lost the support of the House’

Following in the Swedish parliament’s footsteps in recognising Palestinian statehood, the British House of Commons voted yes for Palestine 13 October. The Spanish Socialist Party now wants the Madrid parliament to do the same.

A staggering 274 British MPs voted for and 12 against this motion:

This House believes that the Government should recognise the State of Palestine alongside the State of Israel, as a contribution to securing a negotiated two state solution.”

While this largely symbolic recognition is unbinding on the government and will not bring a Palestinian state into fruition, the moral and political significance of the arguments put forth by British MPs in debate far outweigh the importance of the motion itself. At the same time, the motion made the lengthy four-hour long debate —largely in favour of Palestinian rights — possible. And this couldn’t have been done without pointing out, in the words of MPs, Israel’s “bullying”,  its violations, illegal settlement expansion, repeated wars on Gaza, and subsequent “humanitarian crisis of catastrophic.

The debate clearly reflected growing frustration with Israel, with its latest war on Gaza proving to be a turning point. “The Israeli government has lost the support of the House,” precisely because of Gaza, concluded Conservative MP Andrew Griffiths for Burton and Uttoxeter.

Playwright Wallace Shawn translates ADL ad justifying Israeli child murder into plain English

Submitted by Ali Abunimah from Electronic Intafada

ADL ad that appeared in The Hollywood Reporter.

Playwright and actor Wallace Shawn has responded to this Anti-Defamation League (ADL) ad blaming Palestinians for Israel’s mass slaughter of children in Gaza.

Shawn’s brilliant “translation” of the ad into plain English is below.

Five hundred and sixteen children are among the 2,142 Palestinians killed by Israel’s current bombardment of the Gaza Strip, according to the latest tally from Al Mezan Center for Human Rights.

The ad, which appeared in The Hollywood Reporter, was signed by a number of show business executives. It quotes an infamous statement by Golda Meir, the American colonial settler in Palestine who became Israel’s prime minister, justifying Israel’s slaughter of Arab children during her time.

Along with ADL National Director Abraham Foxman and National Chair Barry Curtiss-Lusher, The Hollywood Reporter identifies some of those who signed the ADL ad as MGM chairman Gary Barber, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, Relativity Media CEO Ryan Kavanaugh, Nu Image/Millennium Films co-chairman Avi Lerner, Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chair Amy Pascal and Saban Capital Group chairman and CEO Haim Saban.

Adults care for Palestinian children wounded in an Israeli air strike at a hospital in Gaza City, 23 August.

Shawn’s response, which also appears in The Hollywood Reporter, is masterful. Here is Shawn’s “translation” of Meir’s words, as they were used in the ADL ad (reproduced in full with permission):
