Putin, Ukraine and What Americans Know

by Robert Parry, Consortium News

A prime example of how today’s mainstream media paradigm works in the U.S. is the case of Ukraine, where Americans have been shielded from evidence that the 2014 ouster of democratically elected President Viktor Yanukovych was a U.S.-supported coup d’etat spearheaded by violent neo-Nazi extremists.

As The New York Times has instructed us, there was no coup in Ukraine; there was no U.S. interference; and there weren’t even that many neo-Nazis. And, the ensuing civil conflict wasn’t a resistance among Yanukovych’s supporters to his illegal ouster; no, it was “Russian aggression” or a “Russian invasion.”

If you deviate from this groupthink – if you point out how U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland talked about the U.S. spending $5 billion on Ukraine; if you mention her pre-coup intercepted phone call with U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt discussing who the new leaders would be and how “to glue” or how “to “midwife this thing”; if you note how Nuland and Sen. John McCain urged on the violent anti-Yanukovych protesters; if you recognize that snipers firing from far-right-controlled buildings killed both police and protesters to provoke the climactic ouster of Yanukovych; and if you think all that indeed looks like a coup – you obviously are the victim of “Russian propaganda and disinformation.”

But most Americans probably haven’t heard any of that evidence revealing a coup, thanks to the mainstream U.S. media, which has essentially banned those deviant facts from the public discourse. If they are mentioned at all, they are lumped together with “fake news” amid the reassuring hope that soon there will be algorithms to purge such troublesome information from the Internet.

So, if Americans tune in to Part Three of Oliver Stone’s “The Putin Interviews” on “Showtime” and hear Russian President Vladimir Putin explain his perspective on the Ukraine crisis, they may become alarmed that Putin, leader of a nuclear-armed country, is delusional…

  1. Yes, excellent article by Robert Parry. Nothing is reported regarding Ukraine by the western media since the coup. But Yatsenuk (installed by Victoria Nuland et al), certainly did exactly what he was supposed to do before resigning in 2016: the dismantling of the entire social safety net for all Ukraine citizens, massive austerity, huge cuts in pensions, privatization of the state, cuts in healthcare and fuel subsidies, following the exact same scheme of the Western vultures after the breakup of the Soviet Union. The result was massive poverty and a complete disaster for the population. If you want to look at what some MAJOR roads in Western Ukraine look like today, after the infra-structure has been completely neglected (it wasn’t much better under Yanukuvich either, but certainly has not improved) take a look at this:

In any case, the entire object was to dismantle the state, and to bring Ukraine into NATO with the promise of eventual EU membership. This membership will not happen, but they will probably be allowed to join NATO. US National Guard units are over there training their military. All you have to do is look at US military websites, it’s all out in the open, but our regular press doesn’t mention it.

    • the same shit they did to Greece after they elected the fake progressive Tsipras. When they get their hooks in, they got to go full “shock doctrine” on them as quickly as humanly possible. Which scares me because I know, this drip-drip-drip transition we’ve been seeing over here is sure to give way to the sudden one folks in places like Chile, Greece and Ukraine suffered.

      • Most of the elites, I think, prefer the drip-drip-drip method in the western sphere, simply because the changes are not sudden, thus lowering the chances of any real uprising or resistance. If that should happen, they’ve got this pretty much covered too, via continuous + ongoing misinformation campaigns on a grand scale. It’s nothing new, only that the speed of information exchange happens on a much faster scale. If things get out of hand, then yes, some massive ‘external’ event will happen and most citizens will go along with the official narrative. Some of the elites only want to make a quick buck using any method they can (Trump belongs to that camp), but others want to cement permanent rule and think long term. That faction is far more dangerous, I believe. Also, don’t forget, that the elites are very competitive amongst themselves, given that most of them are Type A personalities anyway and they act globally. The politicians are merely the public faces of the a vast network of power-players who are not all known to the public. There is so much wealth offshore, trillions, and even Blackrock is just merely a corporate entity with quite a few players, parasites eating away.
But, yes, if push comes to shoves, they will have no qualms about doing a ‘Chile’ here. They certainly have prepared the ultimate ground for doing so, including a massive surveillance state. They will manipulate and curtail everything online, and with the upcoming “internet of things” IoT, they will create the ultimate dystopia. Problem is, it may not work out as they planned…
In my view, Tripras was actually genuine up to a point, but the alignment of power against him from the EU was simply too strong to overcome. In my view, Varofakis was the more dangerous guy, the media star, and the most ‘fake’ in this entire scenario. He’s now pushing for “universal income” – which is probably another trojan horse, although it sounds good on the surface. The problem with this is NOT that there isn’t enough money to put this into place, there is plenty of money, if corporate taxes are actually increased globally, but that all other social programs will be privatized alongside, with the ‘universal income’ as the ONLY safety net left in existence, which would be an even bigger disaster. Try living on EU 1060 per month while still paying rent, housing, food and private medical care. It’s a joke. Not to mention, that virtually all of Silicon Valley is pushing very hard for this. Yeah…what could possibly go wrong?

  2. The video is from 2013, before the coup, and essentially a propaganda video from a Polish website (pro Western), making fun of the conditions in Ukraine before the coup, which happened a year later. But rest assured, nothing has improved there at all. Ukraine is completely broke and ordinary people are paying the price for this massive corruption. A carrot was dangled in front of the pro-Western population…and nothing has materialized for them. At present, pro-Russian oligarchs are trying to get back into the game. The entire country is a complete mess.
