UPDATE: This from a writer who was invited to stand with AIPAC and J Street (yes, J Street stands with Israel on the issue of bombing and murdering Palestinian children). The writer, MJ Rosenberg, had this too say about the offer:
“The only way we can achieve peace and security is to create real deterrence via a crushing response that will make sure they don’t try to test us again,” he said. “This isn’t an all-out war, but an operation with defined goals.” If a ground invasion was authorised, Israel would have to “see it through,” he said. “This wasn’t done during Operation Cast Lead [the 22-day war four years ago], which is why we failed to achieve our goal.” Israel’s hardline foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman
The Palestinians didn’t “test” Israel. Israel killed two Palestinians and then assassinated a Palestinian defense minister. Like cowards they snuck in and took a cheap shot and when Gaza responded, they suddenly jumped back and feigned indignity at being “attacked”. It’s a coward’s tactic used by little bullies since grade school.
Yes, the defined goals are
- keeping Palestinians from attempting to appeal to the United Nations for observer status on route to being recognized as a nation state
- taking Gaza so they can fully claim the LNG field off Gaza’s coast and tap it for their own use
Only a fool would call what Israel did to Gaza in late 2008 a “war”. It was mass murder and the targeting of civilians and hospitals and schools and even children. It was a crime against humanity at least, barbaric brutality carried out by racist aggressors at worst.
“The only way we can achieve peace and security is to create real deterrence via a crushing response”
This is the most despicable and pathetic comment I have heard of late from Israeli warmongers. Yes, the ONLY way they can achieve anything is by bullying and attacking and stealing what they want. They are apparently incapable of using diplomacy, they are incapable of accepting they won’t get everything they want, so they attack and murder and kill innocent people by the dozens the whole time pretending to the entire world that they are the poor innocent victims themselves.
Yet the world sees this for what it is and while the rest of civil society condemns their actions, a few cowards in Washington condone it and that is apparently enough for the Israeli people to lie themselves into thinking they have fooled the world. They have fooled no one but themselves. That is why at once this comment is horrific and pathetic.
Israel walks through the court naked demanding we all praise their flowing robes while only a few twisted and rotting sycophants whisper in their ears as we turn away in utter disgust.
Israel demands civil society shun them and leave them to their own devices. And that day will come.
Glenn Greenwald puts it well in his article for the Guardian and should serve as a dire forecast of things to come for poor little perpetual victim Israel:
“A central premise of US media coverage of the Israeli attack on Gaza – beyond the claim that Israel is justifiably “defending itself” – is that this is some endless conflict between two foreign entitles, and Americans can simply sit by helplessly and lament the tragedy of it all. The reality is precisely the opposite: Israeli aggression is possible only because of direct, affirmative, unstinting US diplomatic, financial and military support for Israel and everything it does. This self-flattering depiction of the US as uninvolved, neutral party is the worst media fiction since TV news personalities covered the Arab Spring by pretending that the US is and long has been on the side of the heroic democratic protesters, rather than the key force that spent decades propping up the tyrannies they were fighting.” Glenn Greenwald
