Obama Becomes Pinochet: The Growing Despotism in Washington

by Scott Creighton

The level of outright hypocrisy exhibited by the Obama administration is absolutely staggering. It’s as if they fully expect their product, Obama™, to be able to get away with anything while the election is creeping nearer and the Demadrones are quaking in fear over Mitt and the “Republican War on Women™ “

Over at the New York Times they are doing their best to present yet another Obama betrayal as a kind of victory for the American people. They claim that even though President Obama is thwarting the will of congress and the American people by constantly doing “end arounds” with his signing statements and various “executive orders”, he’s actually doing it … for us.

They are calling it a “shift” to the unitary executive authority and they provide some University of Chicago professor who claims it’s just fine. Remember, Obama is from Chicago and so are the neoliberal “Chicago Boys” who are currently busy wrecking the country and the world by trying to make everything into Pinochet’s Chile.

Do any of the Obamaites out there remember how outraged we all were when Dick Cheney claimed the authority to expand the unitary executive powers during the Bush years? And now Obama’s doing that exact same thing with absolutely no resistance being offered by the so-called “progressives” flirting around Think Progress or Move On?

One thing the Times article talks about is how Obama will continue to expand these unitary executive powers in his next term in office if the republicans continue to hold a majority in the House of Representatives or even take control of the Senate.

Aides say many more such moves are coming. Not just a short-term shift in governing style and a re-election strategy, Mr. Obama’s increasingly assertive use of executive action could foreshadow pitched battles over the separation of powers in his second term, should he win and Republicans consolidate their power in Congress. New York Times

One of Obama’s most recent executive orders is an obvious study in pure hypocrisy.

He’s claiming that in order to help those “dissidents” in Iran and Syria (you know… the ones who aren’t from Iran and Syria but they pretend to be so they can get the paychecks from institutions like the National Endowment for Democracy and the State Department for committing acts of terrorism?) they are now claiming the authority to penalize various institutions and individuals who make it possible for the official governments of those countries to monitor the “dissident’s” activities.

Obama is actually hypocritical enough to make the claim that Iran and Syria are oppressing their people, committing “human rights violations” by trying to keep track of the foreign terrorists who are killing civilians on behalf of NATO countries in an effort to destabilize those countries.

How hypocritical is this? Let me count the ways:

  1. This is what Obama does just a few weeks after his “justice” department prosecuted a blogger for translating dissident writings that they felt were derogatory of American policy.
  2. This is what Obama does after pushing to get the NDAA passed in congress which enables his administration to arrest and arbitrarily detain any American citizen indefinitely under military jurisdiction.
  3. This is what Obama does just after signing into law a provision that enables the federal felony arrest of protesters who just happen to be protesting in or around anyone who is under the protection of the Secret Service (meaning President Obama and his administration)
  4. Not only has illegal wiretapping and surveillance continued under Barack Obama, but it has flourished beyond the wildest dreams of the most fascist neocons on the planet.
  5. And do we need to talk about the fact that Obama is currently prosecuting the CIA spook who went public about torture in a book long after George bush admitted approving torture programs? Long after everyone in this country knew we torture people in spite of the Geneva Conventions?
  6. Do we need to mention the fact that Bradley Manning is still in solitary confinement while CIA asset Assange is doing his own TV show from some mansion in London?

The Obama administration is making it very clear: they don’t care about being held accountable by their constituents because they, like the fans of the Cheney/Bush days before them, put identity politics ahead of anything resembling a conscience.

Obama is continuing his administration’s attempts to force yet another illegal regime change.

Obama is pushing forward with the unconstitutional notion of the unitary executive authority while signing off on programs that do nothing for the people and serve big business and the financial hawks of Wall Street (take the recent “JOBS Bill and the current mad rush to completely privatize the public education system, prison system, and the postal services)

This recent executive order of Obama’s targeting Iran and Syria is plain enough to see for all those who can get beyond their emotional attachment to product Obama™ : they are saying that anyone interfering with their destabilization plans in Syria and Iran will be penalized to the extent that the Obama administration and the State Department can locate and seize assets. They have no authority to do this, to inflict penalties on citizens of other countries for completely legal actions taking place abroad, yet, this is the claim Obama and his handlers are making through their “unitary executive” orders.

“The approach also exposes Mr. Obama to accusations that he is concentrating too much power in the White House. Earlier this year, Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, delivered a series of floor speeches accusing Mr. Obama of acting “more and more like a king that the Constitution was designed to replace” and imploring colleagues of both parties to push back against his “power grabs.””  New York Times

Another 4 years with this man in charge of the left-cover administration is almost assured. Another four years with him having nothing to lose and everything to gain for himself and his family after they leave office, just as Clinton and Bush did before him.

Now that he has no objections to wielding almost dictatorial authority, we can expect the complete Chicago Boys treatment of the nation to start very soon without a peep coming from the so-called left.

The “Greatest man of our generation“?  Right.  The Miracle of Chile is coming to America. Don’t say you weren’t warned. We now have our very own Augusto Pinochet.

He’s “king of the world” now isn’t he?

Congress doesn’t matter, the will of the people doesn’t matter. Like Pinochet and every other puppet dictator we have installed before him, nothing matters to Barack Obama except what his owners demand of him and we can see that clearly in his most recent JOBS Bill which did nothing to create jobs and did everything to allow Wall Street to swindle more money from their own clients while creating the next big bubble to burst and destroy the economy for good.

The Miracle of Chile is coming to America to the sounds of cheers and applause.

Talk about going out with a whimper….

President Barack Obama has signed an executive order targeting people and entities who use technology to help authoritarian regimes in Iran and Syria suppress their people.

“Technologies should be in place to empower citizens, not to oppress them,” Obama said on Monday at a speech at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

Obama was introduced at the museum by Holocaust survivor Eli Wiesel. Obama told Wiesel: “You show us the way. If you cannot give up, if you can believe, then we can believe.”

The president said the White House’s new “atrocities prevention board” will meet for the first time Monday. He said the board’s aim was to better prevent and respond to mass atrocities and war crimes.

Obama said the “seeds of hate” had too often been allowed to flourish. “Too often the world has failed to stop the massacre of innocents on a massive scale,” said the president.

Obama’s speech came as the US faces calls to orchestrate an international solution to the deadly crackdown on dissidents in Syria. “National sovereignty is never a license to slaughter your people,” Obama said.

So I guess the Obama regime will crack down on folks who “support” governments that he claims to be cracking down on their terrorists (whom we support, of course).

Now here’s a piece of an interesting article by Paul Craig Roberts, who served as an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration:

China is often a country about which Washington’s moralists get on their high horse. However, China’s “authoritarian” government is actually more responsive to its people than America’s “elected democratic” government. Moreover, however incomplete on paper the civil liberties of China’s people, the Chinese government has not declared that it can violate with impunity whatever rights Chinese citizens have. And it is not China that is running torture prisons all over the globe.

For some time I have had in mind a realistic comparison of the two countries instead of the standard propagandistic comparison, but Ron Unz has beat me to the task (see, China’s Rise, America’s Fall and Chinese Melamine and American Vioxx: A Comparison ). Unz provides a chance for an education. Don’t miss it.

Unz has done an excellent job. Moreover, he cleverly understates the case for China and overstates the case for America so as not to unduly arouse the flag-wavers. Nevertheless, the conclusion is clear: The Chinese are less threatened by their “extractive elites” than Americans are by their counterparts. Moreover, it is America’s, not China’s, extractive elites who are bombing, occupying, and droning other countries. As the bumper sticker says, “Be nice to America or we will bring democracy to your country.”

As for economic management, there is no comparison. Unz reports that during the past three decades, China has achieved the most rapid rate of economic development in human history. Moreover, most of the new income has flowed into the pockets of Chinese workers, not to the one percent. While American real median incomes have been stagnant for decades, incomes for Chinese workers have doubled every decade for three decades. A recent World Bank report attributes more than 100 percent of the drop in global poverty rates to China’s rise.

In the last decade China’s industrial output quadrupled. China now produces more automobiles than America and Japan combined and accounted for 85 percent of the increase in the world’s production of cars in the past decade.

In 1978 the American economy was 15 times larger than China’s. In the next few years China’s GDP is expected to exceed that of the US.

This is heady stuff providing astonishing details of how poorly Americans are served by their elites. America has failed, because political elites represent only the powerful special interests that write the country’s laws in exchange for funding the political campaigns of “lawmakers.” To divert attention from their failures, American elites point fingers at external scapegoats. China, for example, is accused of manipulating its currency. As Unz says, the scapegoating is political theater designed for the ignorant and gullible.

At the end of the Roberts article is a quote from The Matrix:

    /¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
“The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you’re inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system, and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.”

I am going to risk the righteous of the rest of you by suggesting that Obama (who I see as sort of passively sociopathic) is simply not as awful as Mitt Romney. He takes his perverse orders from the ruling leets, but Romney ties his dog to the roof of his car, and actively makes the lives of his subjects miserable. When he was governor of my commonwealth of Massachusetts, he closed most of the motor vehicle offices, making me drive 50 miles to renew my license. He made everyone suffer! Thank God we got rid of him!

Obama is only symbolic of The Problem. Oppressive voting technology is part of the true social disease — we should be demanding hand counted paper ballots, counted locally on the spot with the results announced before being sent to larger tabulations. We also need the Padded Score Voting method (not what BradBlog’s Brad Friedman calls the “IRV virus” method that has been shown to have the same degree of spoiler effect as our current plurality method). With Padded Score Voting, we could give as many candidates as we wish either no vote at all, 10 votes, 11 votes, or 12 votes. Then the votes are simply added up, and the spoiler effect is really tiny. Only then will we get out of the two party trap we are in.

  5. The Peoples radar is so cluttered with distraction it’s a wonder to me that any of us can track a blip long enough to see past it’s beginning, let alone to it’s middle or it’s end. I know I can’t, so I’ve become cynical wherever government is the blip.

Like, I’ve come to believe that everything they do is done by design–slick, crafty design, greased by greenbacks. Like this Constitution thing: To me, it’s like The Fathers came together, then came away with something that read like it had a chance to work, but that was left to their sons to make sure it didn’t–like sons Obama and Grassley here, doing their part, along with the rest of the sons of Washington.

And I wonder if that’s not how it was set-up in Commie, Socialist Russia, too, and in whatever government else is out there, because it seems like they’re all bound to end up looking the same since they all end up acting the same.

  6. Once again Scott, I love your parallelism!!! Indeed Pinochet is Obomer twin brother.
