While the MSM stops the presses and congress takes yet more time off (to keep from having to vote on raising the debt ceiling) the “progressive” left and the neocon riddled right both are praising yesterday’s speech delivered by the Peace Prize “winning” president, Barack Obama. Obama is being hailed for calling for civility in political discourse and even empathy towards one another as if somehow some lesser president would have come out in favor of cowardly shooting sprees and killing 9 year-old children.
“He urged Americans to “expand our moral imaginations” and “sharpen our instincts for empathy” — even with those who are political adversaries.” “I believe we can be better,” Obama said to a capacity crowd at the University of Arizona basketball arena — and to countless others watching across America. “Those who died here, those who saved lives here — they help me believe. We may not be able to stop all evil in the world, but I know that how we treat one another is entirely up to us.” MSNBC
Yes, a little more civility in our political punditry would be a good thing and no, it probably isn’t a good idea to go to political rallies with the intention of killing anything that moves. When put like that, its kinda stating the obvious, isn’t it? But let Product Obama make those same, blank, clichéd points, and its like he’s the reincarnation of MLK or Christ himself. The PR machine doesn’t need much these days. I am reminded of George W. Bush, literally standing on a pile of rubble which still had parts of victims in it, making his historic “we are going to get you” speech. What else was he going to say?
If I have learned one thing about the current president of the United States, it’s that the man’s words are completely disconnected from his actions and the actions of his administration. At times like these we would all like to lose ourselves in the pleasant fiction that somehow this time he means what he says, but that is completely delusional thinking by this point.
“We love you” audience at Obama Tuscon pep rally speech
Let’s face it: were it that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords had not been one of the victims of this tragic events, congress would be rolling along, Obama would have made some statement from Washington, the press would have long ago moved onto something else, and no one would be basking in the self-aggrandizing warmth of Obamalove right now. But the sad reality is that this changes nothing in the mind of Obama. His administration will continue along, on the same neoliberal blood-lust course that was set before him during the Bush and Clinton regimes. The hypocrisy and irony of Obama’s lofty rhetoric is lost on the vast majority of the American people.
“Obama said, the killings should make Americans ask themselves “Have we shown enough kindness and generosity and compassion to people in our lives?”” MSNBC
Just this past Friday, President Peace Prize signed into law H.R. 6523, a bill authorizing military spending for fiscal year 2011, for the defense of the country and “its interests abroad, for military construction, and for national security-related energy programs.”. But also included in that piece of financial legislation, is language that prevents the president from closing Gitmo and bringing people we are detaining there into the U.S. to face criminal trials in federal court. It also prevents the president from transferring said “suspects” to other nations where they can either be tried or released.
In the end, the president justified signing the bill into law (rather than simply vetoing the draconian bill) by stating we needed to get that damn MONEY to all those contractors and keep that war going at all costs.
“Despite my strong objection to these provisions, which my Administration has consistently opposed, I have signed this Act because of the importance of authorizing appropriations for, among other things, our military activities in 2011.” Barack Obama
Now, the humanitarian president talks about empathy, kindness, and compassion? I call bullshit.
Where were the president’s lofty words when ProPublica came out with a report about the military routinely denying soldiers their deserved Purple Hearts for suffering traumatic brain injuries (like the one Giffords now suffers from)? Where was Obama’s compassion then?
Wanna see a video of a guy getting his third concussion in Afghanistan and another guy getting shot in his helmet (he’s fine by the way) under Obama’s watch?
Here’s a story of 3 children who were killed by U.S. forces in Afghanistan just this past November. Where is Obama’s soaring speeches about kindness, compassion, and empathy for them?
In the first 6 months of 2010, 1,271 civilians lost their lives in Afghanistan and for what? “its interests abroad, for military construction, and for national security-related energy programs“?. Is it all about the military construction deals and the new TAPI Pipeline deal they just signed that has to go through Taliban controlled areas? Can we “do better” Mr. President?
How about those 21 children that President Obama killed in Yemen in Dec. of 2009 with a cruise missile carrying cluster bomb munitions? Do those kids and their families deserve a warm feelie-goodie speech from President Peace Prize about “expand(ing) our moral imaginations” ?
The only thing Obama has expanded is the illegal surveillance on U.S. citizens, home foreclosures, bonuses for the banking elites, food stamp dependency, the rate of homelessness in America, corporate profit margins, record setting spending for wars, and the immoral CIA “assassination by drone” programs in Pakistan. 5 innocent people died in Tuscon this past Saturday… at least 7 died in Pakistan just this past Aug. three of which were kids killed by a CIA directed drone attack, which we paid for and NASA helped create.
Where is that moral imagination when they needed it, President Obama? Where is that moral imagination when we need it?
Your words are hollow and feeble Mr. President. They do no service to those who suffer now and who lost loved ones this past Saturday because, quite frankly, upon closer inspection, they are simply bullshit. They are the words of an opportunist puppet making the best of a bad situation. They are the words of a product looking to improve his poll numbers. They are an insult to anyone who cares about people across the world and our fellow Americans living here in poverty. You should be ashamed Mr. President for using this horrific act as nothing more than an opportunity to spout short, talking point sound-bites about morals you certainly don’t possess. You are no better than George Bush, standing on a pile of broken Americans, puffing out your chest and trying to “look” heroic.
Obama shouldn’t be praised for this speech, he should be shunned. Because it’s just more bullshit from the product called “CHANGE”.
