Colbert’s Iraq War Propaganda

by Scott Creighton

It's a Wonderful Occupation!

It's a Wonderful Occupation!

It’s a “happy, happy, joy, joy” war for Stephen Colbert now that Obama’s in charge.

This week he is staging his show in Iraq; entertaining the troops and generally making them feel better about a bad situation. Gotta give him credit for that. But unfortunately, that isn’t why he’s doing it.

Team DLC Obama™ Brand has taken a lot of flak from the (“extremist”) left for his continuation of the illegal occupation of Iraq.

So in order to “normalize” the extended occupation in the minds of the “progressives”, off goes Stephen Colbert (one of their most respected critics of the previous administration and a current cheerleader for the new one) to “yuck it up” with the troops and various generals “in the field”. This way, they can promote the opinions of the “generals on the ground” the way that Bush used to do, directly to the staunchest critics of the war.

We’re not quite ready to declare victory,” he said. “Things are moving forward but again, it’s about bringing long-term stability.”  Gen. Ray Odierno

Of course, Obama looms in the video display, in a staged and rehearsed appearance getting his general to shave Colbert’s head, then McCain himself chimes in, just to make sure we got republican support right along with the democrats.

Former Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain also made a surprise appearance in a videoclip in which he thanked the troops for their service and reminded them to clean their musketsMSNBC

"GOBAMA!!!" DailyKos

"GOBAMA!!!" DailyKos

After getting his “high and tight” Colbert ran through the crowd of service men and women, giving “high-5s” to everyone…

The soldiers are getting paid a thousand dollars a month to put their lives on the line to pacify a nation for corporate interests and Colbert gets paid about $400,000 a month to help sell the war to the left.  Meanwhile, back at home, as Colbert himself pointed out earlier last week, soldier’s homes are being foreclosed on at a rate 4 times that of the national average.

Does nobody else see how disgusting that is?

And speaking of antiwar activist defectors, DailyKos isn’t  missing an opportunity to prove their value as an “Embedded Blogger” (that term is MINE! I just made it up!!) as they are covering the story and are just going gah-gah over the splendor of the whole thing!

Come on! Give me that Operation Mockingbird paycheck!

I think it’s great that the Commander in Chief can take time out for some fun with the troops and a wacky late-night comedian.  … He’s (President Obama) also done quite a bit to break the myth that being a Democrat = being anti-militaryDailyKos

  1. The make-me-an-offer crowd always seems to include a major disappointment along with the usual shills. The Democrats have a long history of collusion with the power elite……..so why do we continue to associate with them?

Americans are very restive these days, as swelling ranks of “independents” show.

Now it’s time for Independence! (once we’ve all suppressed our gorge reflex)

  2. Colbert always had his hair ‘just so’…. you could tell he was proud of his hair style and he probably based his manhood on it.
I wonder how much they paid him to have it cut? Or did he make a mistake on a show and say a little something wrong… and was this his way of proving he had found the ‘right path’…..
    I wonder…..

  3. This seems to be the only article on the web that reflects my experience when viewing the show. I´m German and the entire time I could not help but imagine “Stefan Kolbert” entertaining the Wehrmacht in occupied [insert victim here] in 1943. Amazing how people could enjoy that show with so many dead, tortured, fleeing and uranium-contaminated people outside that safe zone. What an incomprehensible insult to the victims.

  4. Good point, entactogen.

  5. Something else from sometime back that I remember seeing from over there: One of those afternoon Pentagon briefing they used to air, where a couple of generals dressed in starched camouflage were taking time out for some fun, chortling over a video they were showing of what they called The Luckiest Man In Iraq. The camera was honed in on a bridge that was about to be blown to bits by one of our aircraft. Just as the weapon was fired, a vehicle came streaking through the picture and across the bridge.

    It was a real rib-tickler.

  6. […] Posted by Suzi on 12 Jun 2009 at 01:35 am | Tagged as: Politics While catching up on this weeks Colbert Report I was saddened to find Stephen Colbert appears to have gone over to Iraq not only to entertain the troops but also to provide us with some good old war propaganda. So far on the show he has had Obama, Bush No.1 and Clinton give short amusing cockle warming speeches to the troops. He has had the Iraq Deputy Prime Minter on congratulating the Americans for invading the country to save them tyranny and genocide. He has performed a little skit on the ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ anti-gay army policy which appeared to conclude that the policy wasn’t all that bad. Meanwhile there has been nothing on the number of people killed due to the illegal invasion. Nor has there been any mention of torture, use of depleted uranium or the use of white phosphorus. He has not mentioned the sanctions that devestated the country for a decade between the two Iraq wars. Colbert in his brief history of Iraq totally failed to mention that the USA funded and supported Saddam Hussein. While it is true that the people of Iraq are better off without an oppressive ruler like Hussein – for Colbert to only focus on that aspect of the situation amounts to pro war propaganda. It doesn’t take long to mention the facts – check out Chomsky’s sucinct summery of them. I noticed there was wasn’t a whole lot of discussion on the web although one blogger has talked about it. […]

  7. The cutting of hair and its relationship to “manhood” is actually quite interesting as it occurs frequently within groups of “warriors” across times and cultures. Suicide Bombers shave their entire bodies before a mission and the french Foreign Legion used it as an “initiation ritual” to create a fictive kinship between mercenaries who often fought each other just a few years earlier (like former french and german soldiers after WWII). So this goes clearly beyond the mere practicality of short or no hair.
I don´t know if Colbert is aware of this but Odierno is for sure… watch the scene again with this in mind.

    • Absolutely… also notice where the “order” came from to cut his hair… Obama. Colbert was a stauch critic of the previous president’s imperial agenda, so much so that he lambasted them when he hosted the press club dinner, right to their faces… now what happens? Another imperial president comes along, using many of the same people and policies of Bush, and he “gives the order” to indoctrinate Colbert, in public, in Iraq, in front of the troops, and Colbert just has to suck it up and take it like the clown he is.
