An influential Israeli rabbi has said God should strike the Palestinians and their leader with a plague, calling for their death in a fiery sermon before Middle East peace talks set to begin next week.

“Abu Mazen and all these evil people should perish from this earth,” Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, spiritual head of the religious Shas party in Israel’s government, said in a sermon late on Saturday, using Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s popular name.

“God should strike them and these Palestinians — evil haters of Israel — with a plague,” the 89-year-old rabbi said in his weekly address to the faithful, excerpts of which were broadcast on Israeli radio on Sunday.

Time is running out for Israel. And the Israeli government knows it. The Jewish Diaspora, especially the young, has a waning emotional and ideological investment in Israel. The demographic boom means that Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories will soon outnumber Jews. And Israel’s increasing status as a pariah nation means that informal and eventually formal state sanctions against the country are probably inevitable.

Don’t Forget, Israel Is a Democracy

How lucky we are to have the extreme Right standing guard over our democracy.

This week, the Knesset voted by a large majority (47 to 34) for a law that threatens imprisonment for anyone who dares to deny that Israel is a Jewish and democratic state.

The private member’s bill, proposed by MK Zevulun Orlev of the “Jewish Home” Party, which sailed through its preliminary hearing, promises one year in prison to anyone who publishes “a call that negates the existence of the state of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state,” if the contents of the call might cause “actions of hate, contempt, or disloyalty against the state or the institutions of government or the courts.”

(“might” – meaning it hasn’t happened yet and the interpretation of what the effect of the published material COULD be.)

One can foresee the next steps. A million and a half Arab citizens cannot be expected to recognize Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. They want it to be “a state of all its citizens” – Jews, Arabs, and others. They also claim with reason that Israel discriminates against them, and therefore is not really democratic.

Why Israel Doesn’t Want the U.S. to Attend the World Conference on Racism

So I wonder why it is, that Israel pressured the Obama administration, to go even further than the Bush administration did in 2001 and boycott the World Conference on Racism altogether. Remember, in 2001, a delegation did end up going to the Durban conference but then pulled out just days before 9/11. Late last month, Black History month, the Obama administration announced it will not attend at all, and they are even pressuring other nation to stay away.

“According to the Times article, one of the primary reasons for the Obama Administration’s decision was that “Israel and some American Jewish groups urged a boycott of the April conference, and several close American allies, including Canada.”  Alter Net

This is quite remarkable considering not only that Obama is the first black president of this nation, refusing to send a delegation to this conference, that by all rights, he should be speaking at himself, but according to an Israeli civil rights monitoring group, racism in on the rise and out of control in Israel right now.

“According to the Israeli Association for Civil Rights, anti-Arab incidents have risen sharply. “Israeli society is reaching new heights of racism that damages freedom of expression and privacy,” says Sami Michael, the organization’s president. Among the Association’s findings:

• Some 55 percent of Jewish Israelis say that the state should encourage Arab emigration; (Emigration is the act of leaving one’s native country or region to settle in another.)
  
• 78 percent of Jewish Israelis oppose including Arab parties in the government;
• 56 percent agree with the statement that “Arabs cannot attain the Jewish level of cultural development”;
• 75 percent agree that Arabs are inclined to be violent. Among Arab-Israelis, 54 percent feel the same way about Jews.
• 75 percent of Israeli Jews say they would not live in the same building as Arabs.

“The tension between Israeli democracy and the country’s Jewish character was the centerpiece of Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu Party’s campaign in the recent election. His party increased its Knesset membership from 11 to 15, and is now the third largest party in the parliament.”

Lieberman, who lives in a West Bank settlement near Bethlehem, calls for a “loyalty oath” from Arab-Israelis, and for either expelling those who refuse or denying them citizenship rights. During a Knesset debate last March, Lieberman told Arab deputies, “You are only temporarily here. One day we will take care of you.” Counter Punch

Church Document Encourages Congregation To Obey Government

A shocking document has come to light from a church in Ohio which educates its congregation that Barack Obama’s presidency is appointed by God and that Obama himself is “God’s minister,” in another perversion of Romans 13, the bible verse cited as an excuse for Christians not to oppose tyranny.

Ohio District Superintendent Rev. John Wooton was responsible for distributing the pamphlet, which was handed out at the Assembly of God church in Ohio, according to a reader who forwarded the document to us. Click here for the PDF file.

“This was handed out at the Assembly of God church that my fiance and I used to attend. We immediately stopped attending after getting this flier about ’submitting to Obama and the government,’ states the reader.

“The pastor even brought children to the front of the church, encouraging them to submit to teachers, firemen, and the police. It was insane.”
