Reports across the board state that the Senate has reached a conclusion, that they are going to give President Peace Prize the authorization to bomb the crap out of another country on behalf of the globalist billionaires that want that damn money (notice John Kerry’s billionaire globalist wife sitting behind him in the hearings?)
That’s not exactly the case though. No vote has been held as of yet, not even in committee.
What has happened is a couple of Vichy Senators got together after playing poker on their I-Phones during the testimony and said they were going to revise the president’s authorization request to “limit” his use of weapons of mass destruction to 60 days, with an additional 30 days if the military industrial complex needs more bombs to be dropped. They also said there will be no boots on the ground in “combat actions”. I guess that means they can run around and kick in doors at midnight to get those darn
socialists terrorists rounded up and disappeared.
“President Barack Obama gained ground Tuesday in his drive for congressional backing of a military strike against Syria, winning critical support from House Speaker John Boehner while key Senate Democrats and Republicans agreed to back a no-combat-troops-on-the-ground action in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack.
Officials said the emerging Senate measure would receive a vote Wednesday in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Approval is likely.” AP
I wish I could say this wasn’t expected.
“Congress is in the back pocket of the same corporate and banking interests that need the injection of liquidity they will get from neoliberalizing Syria. AIPAC is already on the march pushing for the resolution. Everyone who is anyone in D.C. is urging this action while the 80% of the American people who stand opposed to more war and carnage carried out in their names get no representation at all.
But congress doesn’t care. They just want a way to sign up for the deal to appease their owners while looking like they’re heroes to their constituents who oppose it.
Let’s say just for the fun of it, that congress amends the request to specifically limit the president to no troops on the ground (save those already on the ground in Syria) and limited cruise missile strikes on selected targets within Syria and Syria only.
Is that a “victory” for our friends at Emptywheel, Moon of Alabama or Jack Goldsmith?” me
The pathos of it all is the fact that this criminal act is being set in motion while the campaign for it is being treated as if it’s some kind of “victory” or “loss” for the president himself. As was the case so many years ago when the voices of reason had to be defeated (or shouted down, as was the case) as they questioned the fabricated evidence of WMDs in Iraq, here we are again and rational thought is actually the enemy of the state; a foe to be vanquished by fake videos and Israeli “intelligence”
