Protester Sets Himself on Fire in Tel Aviv

by Scott Creighton

The dreaded “International Leftists” (as as zionist PR agent David Horowitz described them on the Julian Assange propaganda show) are demonstrating in Jerusalem, Haifa and Tel Aviv. International leftists are the kind of people that demand crazy things like social justice, accountability from their governments, and their adherence to established civil and human rights.

The protesters oppose the austere conditions and the direction the Israeli government is moving in, taking from the poor and disadvantaged and giving to the rich.

A 52 year old man poured gasoline on himself and set himself on fire. Protesters were able to put him out before the ambulance got to him. He was taken to the hospital. He wrote a note:

“The state of Israel stole from me and robbed me. It left me helpless. Two Housing and Construction Ministry committees rejected me, even though I had a stroke.” He also says that he blames “the state of Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the finance minister, Yuval Steinitz, for the humiliation that the weakened citizens go through every day, taking from the poor and giving to the rich.” Haaretz

This latest march is part of a larger protest that has been going on in Israel for over a year. People want less money spent on settlements and the military and more spent on the people and the social safety net. Neoliberal economic policies are crushing Israel as well though the media here in the states rarely makes mention of the growing dissent.

RT reports on these new protests and mentions the fact that back in September, over 10 percent of the entire country took part in an anti-austerity demonstration. That’s a large turnout for one demonstration.

I am immediately reminded of the Greek man who killed himself outside of their Parliament. He was tired of eating out of trash cans and didn’t want to end up being a burden on his family. He picked a nice shady tree, left a little note behind, and that was that.

Some of the signs from the protest speak volumes about what is happening and what the ruling global elite are afraid of… the connection people will feel with other oppressed people across the world… the damned “International Leftist” threat.

  1. I almost have to laugh at how so many people deride the wonderful thing that is the human connection and care to each other and the earth as “leftist”…

    Sad, sad fools…

  2. Talked with a youn Israeli boy about this on Sunday. I think he would want non Israelis to know that large swaths of the Israeli population are speaking out against the government policies.

    • I absolutely know there is a large contingent of Israeli citizens who do not support either the neoliberal internal domestic shifts taking place or the far-right Likud Party foreign policy agenda. Unfortunately for them, the PTB in Israel are cracking down on dissent harder than they are here in the states. People don’t really understand that unfortunately. I should do more coverage on the subject.

Yep very crazy things….(nicely put Scott)

  4. Lemme know when they have “We are all Palestinian” placards. Until then they’re utterly missing the point.

    • Israeli protesters have protested the stealing of Palestine property and the abusive behavior of Israel’s so-called settlers.

  5. Israel/CIA just staged a terror attack in Bulgaria and blamed Iran(take a look at the pics of the bomber when you get a chance). White bomber with a fake US ID. I wonder how Amy Goodman will frame this story? :-)
