Guardians of the Faith: Rachel Maddow Fawns Over Director of Homeland Security

by Scott Creighton

Last week a Democratic House member, Betty McCollum, just got up on the floor of the House of Representatives and stated…

”I don’t want another Oklahoma City to ever take place again. And just as we would not give aid and comfort to al-Qaeda, let us not allow the words of elected leaders to give comfort and comfortable excuses to extremists bent on violence…. When members of congress compare healthcare legislation to government tyranny, socialism, or totalitarianism in the hopes of scoring political points, its like pouring gas on the fire of extremism.” Betty McCollum (D)

How many people who read this website believe… nay…. know that we are facing a developing totalitarian state? How many people here have written as much? Now this woman is suggesting that members of congress can’t talk about these things? What does that mean for people like Ron Paul? Dennis Kucinich?

Chris Hedges to Poverty Scholars: US Government Lacks Legitimacy

The threat we face does not come from Islamic terrorism, it comes from totalitarian capitalism” Chris Hedges

“The thing about being poor in this country is you don’t get a second chance. You can be George Bush and get chance after chance. You can be a cocain addict, you can be a drunk driver, you can walk out on your National Guard service and go AWOL and it never matters cuz daddy has the money to buy it off… but when you are poor, one strike and you are finished.”

It is not our role to take power. It is our role to make the powerful frightened of us. And that is what we have forgotten.” Chris Hedges

“… in order to retain our dignity, our integrity, we have to rebel.” Chris Hedges

I can tell you, I lived in France, and I can tell you that if the French government announced that it was going to cost $50,000 a year to go to college, the French college students would shut the country down the next day. That is the kind of power we need to reclaim.” Chris Hedges “Power that is centered around moral issues that we will not compramise on (hear that Dennis Kucinich?). That is what we need to center on.”

There will be larger and larger “internal colonies” as King and Malcom X called them, within the country where people will live in profound desperation… and that act of mobilizing these people will become crucial in the months and years ahead because there is a counterveiling force which has latched onto this legitimate rage and a bankrupt liberal force that refuses to recognize this rages’ legitimacy.” Chris Hedges

“I think we have to face the fact that the poverty iniciative and the civil rights movements failed… What we have undergone is an assault on the working class which has essentially decimated the working class itself… what we are going to see is a perminant underclass develop in our so-called “jobless recovery” that Larry Summers talks about… the great failing of the liberal class in the United States is it’s decision to continue to support the democratic party after 1994 and the passage of NAFTA. NAFTA thrust a knife into the back of the American working class… it is not an exaggeration to say at this point that our political and economic elite constitutes a criminal class.”  Chris Hedges

“… there is a difference between criticizing a policy or a politician, and demonizing the government that guarantees our freedoms and the public servants who implement them.”  Bill Clinton

“The longer the liberal party continues to support the democratic party that collaberates in the Weimarization of the American working class, the less credibility they have. … The fear that I have is that the legitimate rage which is being expressed by our dispossesed, is being encaptured by protofascist movements… and the longer the liberals continue to speak in the bloodless, sterile language of “policy and issues” the less credibility they will have.”  Chris Hedges

Layoff notices sent to thousands of US teachers

by Andrea Peters, WSWS

Hundreds of thousands of public school teachers across the United States are facing possible layoffs this coming academic year.

Confronting massive budget deficits, school districts throughout the country have been sending out notices (“pink slips”) to employees this spring, warning them that they are unlikely to have a job in the fall. The bloodletting is worst in California, Illinois, New York, Michigan, and New Jersey, but nearly every region in the country is affected.
