This is a very important interview with Noam Chomsky. Unfortunately too many of us haven’t seen it and I think that is largely because some have focused on a single statement made by Chomsky in which he stated that “no one in their right mind wants Iran to develop nuclear weapons”. Some have accused Chomsky of being “controlled opposition” for having made that statement, as if he is somehow helping to justify Obama’s next war with Iran.
I believe that some people are repeating this criticism without understanding what Chomsky was saying and with fully understanding that some elements in this movement will find a way to keep his interview from being seen because he addresses many serious issues, so they focused on that one statement, took it out of context, in order to diminish the effect of his interview by undermining his relevancy to the very people who should see it.
Chomsky was saying that anyone in their right mind don’t want to see ANYMORE nukes out there, period, but that Iran clearly has the right to develop nuclear material for reactors. He also stated that the Iranians, if they were to develop nukes, would not be inclined to use them. It would be suicide. He quotes CIA intel stating that there would be perhaps a 1% chance of Iran actually launching a nuke were they to develop one.
Just some of what others apparently don’t want you to hear… 1. Israel has nuclear weapons and they are already positioned off the coast of Iran with nuclear submarines… 2. Israel and the United States are in violation of the UN Charter when they actively threaten hostilities against Iran… 3. the supposed hijackers of 911 were never accurately identified by the US and they still haven’t been… 4. millions of innocent people were killed when Bush and Blair launched their illegal war on Afghanistan and Iraq… 5. the Obama administration is simply a continuation of the second Bush term… 6. the US doesn’t want to put “terror” suspects on trial in civlian courts because they have no evidence… 7. the Obama administration is actively working to overturn the Supreme Court ruling that detainees have to be afforded rights even in Gitmo (a ruling even the Bush administration had to abide by)… 8. there is an overwhelming international consensus about the way to settle the Israel Palestine issue which is to recognize the two state settlement (June 1967 accords) with minor modifications… 9. Obama is continuing Bush’s “roadmap” policy dealing with the Israel Palestine problem…10. what Israel is doing in Gaza and the West Bank is destroying the hope for the realization of the international consensus.
When asked if he thinks Obama should empty Gitmo and put them on trial publicly in New York or where ever, he said “Well, it depends on whether we want to be part of the civilized world or a rogue state.”
When talking about his early life as an antiwar protester and activist in 1962 he states ” You know, I would go out and give a speech in a church and there would be, like 4 people. The minister, the organizer, a drunk who wandered in off the streets, and a guy who wanted to kill me.”
Also interesting is the fact
These are very important statements to be made by someone with the political clout that Chomsky has, and certainly important when you consider that he is making them on a nationally televised program and yet, Part 5 has been viewed less than a thousand times. It would appear the propaganda about this interview is doing its job. Do yourself a favor, get a cup of coffee and watch the interview. It’s only an hour.
