Some of the controversial provisions of the Patriot Act that were set to expire have just been extended until next year thanks to our “democrats” in the Senate. They did so with a voice vote with no discussion on the subject. When asked why they didn’t address some of the issues that Americans have concerns with, one democrat tried to pass off this crap as an answer…
“I would have preferred to add oversight and judicial review improvements to any extension of expiring provisions in the USA Patriot Act,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy
, D-Vt., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. “But I understand some Republican senators objected.” MSNBC
(translation: Hillary’s Hitman, Rahm, told us to)
What a dramatic change for Patrick Leahy. I remember when he respected the constitution and our person freedoms. I remember when he stood up for us. It wasn’t that long ago, just under a different administration is all…
Last year, Congress quietly made it easier for this President or any President to declare martial law. That’s right: In legislation added at the Administration’s request to last year’s massive Defense Authorization Bill, it has now become easier to bypass longtime posse comitatus restrictions that prevent the federal government’s use of the military, including a federalized National Guard, to perform domestic law enforcement duties.
When the Insurrection Act is invoked, the President can — without the consent of the respective governors — federalize the National Guard and use it, along with the entire military, to carry out law enforcement duties. [This] is a sweeping grant of authority to the President. [. . . ] In addition to the cases of insurrection, the Act can now be invoked to restore public order after a terrorist attack, a natural disaster, a disease outbreak, or — and this is extremely broad — ‘other condition’.[102] Patric Leahy, 2007 in which he discussed the John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007
Well, God Forbid a republican member of the minority party just might object to something Patrick Leahy feels it’s his constitutional duty to do. I guess that makes sense though. When you have the White House and congress run by neoliberal fascists passing themselves off as democrats as in the “Clinton New (wink wink) Dem” Party, then you have to play ball and make up whatever pathetic excuse comes to mind. Back in the days of real journalism Leahy’s remarkably stupid comment would have ignited at least a little bit of a firestorm. Today sadly, it’s just business as usual.
We should just rename the Senate “Clinton’s House of Neoliberal Lemming Lords” and let them all serve for life. In fact, lets just let them serve for life and then they can automatically appoint their dwindling genetic pool inbred children to take their places when they leave. It’ll save all that money we would spend running those rigged elections, won’t it? Hell! That’s a DEFICIT NEUTRAL PLAN right there… I think I’m on to something!
Then they can use their freshly minted Patriot Act and some gung-ho 19 year old National Guardsman “Patriot” to come kick in my door after they declare me an “insurgent” for writing stuff… like this. After all, free-speech is only free for us (non corporate persons that is) if we don’t go too far and say something that might incite a bad thought in “the terrorists” mind, right?
Indeed, on February 3 Dennis Blair, director of National Intelligence told the House Intelligence Committee that it was now “defined policy” that the U.S. government can murder its own citizens on the sole basis of someone in the government’s judgment that an American is a threat. No arrest, no trial, no conviction, just execution on suspicion of being a threat.
This shows how far the police state has advanced. A presidential appointee in the Obama administration tells an important committee of Congress that the executive branch has decided that it can murder American citizens abroad if it thinks they are a threat. CounterPunch
All that executive branch run Department of Homeland Security has to do, is take them abroad, set them loose on the street, and kill ‘em. Think that’s crazy? Think again.
The people who should have been on trial are the people who abducted her, disappeared her young children, shipped her across international borders, violated her civil liberties, tortured her apparently for the fun of it, raped her, and attempted to murder her with two gunshots to her stomach. Instead, the victim was put on trial and convicted.
This is the unmistakable hallmark of a police state. And this victim is an American citizen. CounterPunch
Just for the record, I’m not planning on traveling abroad anytime soon.
