What was that running down into Sarah Palin’s right ear during the debate?

This photo was never intended to stand alone as evidence, that is why I include the link to the CNN video itself… That is still below. From that video, and many others now, you can see something that looks like it is attached to the arm of her glasses on the right side. You can see it move with her head, and her glasses throughout the video. I have taken another shot of the straight on view of this object, but please, look at the photos, then watch the CNN video so you can see it isn’t just some fluke; it stays there and is attached to her glasses.
This photo was taken straight from CNN’s video on their breaking news website. It’s a screen-shot from their video of the debate.
There were very few moments where Palin’s right side was in view of the camera, but actually it can be seen from the straight on views as well. Here is the original screen-shot I took.
Even without zooming, you can clearly see something attached to her glasses and running into her right ear. At first I thought this might be a hearing aid of some sort, so I looked up other pictures of her to see if I could find one of her wearing a hearing aid. I couldn’t.
By all accounts, Sarah Palin surprised a lot of people as she held her own in this debate. Is this why?
I have not touched up this shot at all. If anyone knows where I can find a picture of Gov. Palin wearing a hearing aid in the past, please let me know.
But this certainly looks like someone was whispering in Sarah’s ear during the debate.
Another question this brings up is why wouldn’t Biden say something about this? Is the election such a sham these days that he would sit by and say nothing?

Take a look at the video and go to Hulu to re-see the debate. They are almost the same in the delivery which means that something like an earpiece helping her may not be that far removed.
I saw it very, very clearly on the HD screen while I was watching the debate. It looks like the clear hearing piece tube that’s on a surveillance-style headset.
These pics don’t show it well, though.
Biden and Palin had a food fight right before the debate…it’s just a noodle hanging from her ear (Uh-oh…Something About Mary conjures up another possibility).
Seriously, the future ex-VP candidate had too much practice to need a voice in her ear. She was well-rehearsed.

That looks like an earpiece to me. I also wondered what she was looking at. She kept looking down at the podium. I thought she was trying to read notes or something. As a woman, I was very put off by her. She acted like a cheerleader and every time she said something, with her folksy way of talking, I thought she would break out in a cheer any minute. In other words, she acted like a ditzy ‘BROAD’. It makes me wish Hillary was up against her!
Though I’d have to say that Palin often sounds like a bobble headed reporter when she speaks, I can’t see anything in the photos and didn’t see anything during the debate, though I don’t have a Hi-def TV. Maybe it’s moose intestine or something.
These debates are all dog and pony shows anyway. Every since a bipartisan group of lobbyists took over running the debates from the League of Women Voters, we have not had anything resembling a real debate. It’s all softball questions with no followups and no specific policies from either side.

if you follow the green arrows, one is pointing to the top and one is pointing to the bottom, where a straight line is going from the edge of the arm of the glasses down to her ear. Straight lines don’t occure very often in ears.

What I noticed is that the ’stem’ of her eyeglasses definitely looked thicker than other photos of her glasses. they’re normally very thin.. but this time they certainly looked different on those close ups. Agree I couldn’t tell if anything was in her ear though.
I don’t like Palin, I don’t like McCain and I don’t like the Republicans.
But, I can honestly say, there is nothing in her ear. Nothing whatsoever. If anything, it’s her hair that’s hanging down slightly.

As I watched the debate I saw what looked like an ear piece hanging from the arm of her right ear. I, too, wondered what it was. There were some cameramen taking photos from her right side – those are the shots you need. Whenever Biden was asked to answer a question first, you could see Palin taking notes, shaking her head in affirmation as if someone were talking to her. She fumbled mostly on the questions when she had to answer the question first…not enough time to listen to the voices in her head.
No evidence in and of itself, but enough to warrant an investigation.
Well, Brandi, a hearing aide is for someone who has a ‘hearing’ disability…… you know.. like maybe a person cannot hear as well as they used to. NOw either Palin has one of those in her ear or she has a tiny ‘receiver’ in her ear. She does have some type of gadget attached to the extra heavy frames of her eye-glasses.
The winking is probably a signal that she understands what is to be said next……. after all… how many VP candidates stand and wink at the camera unless during her cheerleader days

If Palin wanted to cheat during the debate—which she’d have every reason to want to do, based on her embarrasing performances with Couric—she hopefully would not be dumb enough to use an earpiece that’s actually visible on camera. I’d like to see the McCain/Palin ticket crash and burn but I think this is a lame duck. Palin didn’t use an earpiece. She just rehearsed, and stuck to her prepared answers rather than, you know, answering the questions she was being asked. You could see her trying the same thing with Couric, repeating previous answers verbatim when Couric asked her follow-up questions. Couric, however, would have none of it.
If you follow the curve of her ear, it is interupted right where the thing with the white glare on it is. Something is hanging down from those glasses.
Now I don’t know what the hell it is. I just think it is strange. If you watch the video i am linking to, you can clearly see somthing rigid there.

Just went over the CNN video again. You are right—there is definitely some weird white object that looks like it’s hanging from Palin’s glasses over her right ear. Nothing on the other side. Now, I don’t know what that thing is, but it I notice it has a shadow reflected on the inside of her ear, meaning that it is definitely not an earplug-style speaker. Also, the object does not extend near far enough down her ear to reach the auditory canal.
I am newly intrigued to find out what the heck is hanging there, but I repeat my scepticism that if this is an earpiece, it is incredibly obvious to the cameras and incredibly ill positioned. And come on—I don’t like Sarah Palin. I sure don’t hope she’ll be VP. But no one can be surprised that she pulled through the debate OK. She is a professional politician—of course she has some kind of training in this type of situation, and the incoherent babbling we saw with Katie Couric is not, could not be, her A-game. She did fine in the debates when she was elected for governor of Alaska. She is capable of stringing two sentences together. What should be the focus is what she is saying in those sentences—there is ample ammunition t criticise her politically.
Whatever this is, and whatever I am saying… is NOT a critisism of Sarah Palin.
If this is a device of some kind, I can promise you this… Sarah Palin would have been the last person to have wanted to wear it.
Imagine how embarrassing it would be for her if this is in fact an earpiece. Like saying she couldn’t hold her own in the debate.
I doubt very seriously that any candidate for higher office would want this kind of handicap in the debate.

Did anyone else notice, in the shot of Palin leaving the stage with her family after the debate, that she was holding some kind of electronic device with a little antenna on it? What was that?
What I thought was more interesting (and that is very interesting and I would not put anything past Republicans) was the fact that Palin did not know what the Achilles heel reference was. A fundamentalist education is very narrow apparently. I read somewhere else about someone who was upset because some undergraduates were not familiar with the emperors new clothes. It seems with our societies preference for technical education we are raising a generation ignorant in history and literature.

I think you are correct: if she had help the public needs to know. Because if she did have “help” then Biden must have seen it and known it. And if that is the case, and they aren’t saying anything, then the implications are that this whole thing is just one big scripted stage play and we have lost any semblance of democracy in this country. That means we have no real control over any of it any more. And that is what the people need to know; our democracy has been stolen from right out from under us, and we damn well had better want it back.

well that’s interesting. I have looked through the stills and can’t see anything. but there is definitely something visible in the cnn video. can’t explain it.
regarding biden: don’t be so quick to give him a hard time about it, if it was an earpiece, and if he did notice it. there could be reasons why he didn’t mention it (again, IF there was something there and IF he noticed it):
1) he might have seen it and felt sorry for her, and figured that it probably wouldn’t help her anyway, so why bother to point it out.
2) he could have thought it was a set up. there was plenty of talk prior to the debate about the possibility of her wearing an earpiece. so he “sees something there,” points it out, and she comes back saying something like “oh it’s just a stabilizer for my glasses” – how dumb would biden look at that point?
This may not be new. W. appeared to have a similar device bulging from his jacket during the debates in ‘04 (I think). Perhaps a greater question is: Biden had to have noticed it if it was there. Why did he not cry foul?

I was suspicious that she wearing an earpiece about 15 minutes into the debate. If you notice she was usually feverishly writing notes, almost like taking dictations, while Joe was talking and then she wouldn’t answer the current question, instead she insisted on going back to rebut a previous point. Her rebuttal point was always better than her original point.
It seemed like to me that someone was giving her a rebuttal to the last point, via an earpiece, and she was taking dictations. Also the two people that were coaching her for the debate… they were not there at the debate. Where were they?
Go back and study the debate. Most people jot down a couple of notes while their opponent is speaking but she was writing an essay. I don’t put anything past the McCain team. People inside the campaign were saying that she was doing terrible, so how did she miraculously finally get it.

I think that these things are wanted to be found because not only of W’s more than likely usage of a device 4 years ago, but also because this person (Palin) doesn’t belong on that stage. However, she had extensive notes, and a full half of McCain’s top advisors stuck to her like glue for the previous two weeks. Her performance was weak, and this is reflected in the polling. The polls would have probably been more skewed if it weren’t for the expectation of her to suddenly start babbling completely incoherently (which she came close to, but never fully did).
The bottom line is that she didn’t have any earpiece, at least one that is visible in the photos. If she had, and was uncomfortable with the topics and talking points, I can’t imagine it helping anymore than it would distract and confuse her. I can see how there is a curiosity about it, but it doesn’t seem to have happened.

Just on a technical point. It is very possible that they could use a clear tube insert like that. I use headphones very similar to that for live performance. Sound can be directed through a tube. Try putting your ear against any piece of tubing (even an old paper towel tube) and you’ll find that the sound is directed with a high amount of clarity.
A clear tube could be run up and over the ear extending from a small monitor and she would be able to hear from that very well and the main unit could be concealed underneath clothing or hair quite easily.
Maybe more telling is how she speaks and reacts during the debate. She seems distracted as one might be when talking to more than one person at a time. She actually says “OK” (maybe to herself, but possibly acknowledging instruction) while Biden is talking about Afghanistan as if she is receiving coaching… you can see her mouth it while looking down at her notes and Biden is talking.
Incidentally, I’m watching a repeat of the debate and I had the thought she might be listening to someone and so I googled the topic and found this forum. I’m also not a raging liberal by any means, but merely someone who had the same thought.

When you are campaign manager for a potential Vice President, clothes, grooming, shoes, all kinds of things have to be just perfect. Including… Hair.

During the primary I was more for Bill Richardson myself.

It’s a fair question. I’ll give you that.
So I will give you a fair answer;
in a rigged election, you don’t need to sway the voters (though it helps. you would like to have to flip as little as possible, but lets face it, like you said earlier, this country has finally seen through these republicans” and in a fair election, there is NO WAY McCain will win.) what you DO need is a story-line.
It has to be plausable to some degree that the party that stole the election could have won it. Polls will be close near election time, something might happen like Iran or somthing else that makes the selling of the story that people wanted McCain because he is an ex-soldier… something like that.
What they have to do is make the story at least POSSIBLE.
Now, what happens whenever Sarah opens her mouth? Insert foot.
Had she been allowed to go out there, on her own, she could have said just about anything that would have fueled the MSM or at least the liberal blogs for quite some time.
And lets face it; even conservative talk shows and pundits were questioning her qualifications before that “debate”.
What happened to those conservative critics since? Silence.
That’s the point, if she goes out there and is clearly as dumb as a rock, how is ANYONE going to believe they pulled off this come from behind, against all odds victory in Nov.?
That’s why they HAD to do it.
And my guess is, Palin didn’t WANT too. But, that’s just my best conspiracy theory guess. At least, that’s what I would have done if I were them.

Did you see her CBS interview? The fact that she got out without MAJOR mistake is a “win”.

What they did in her ear was the same thing that used to be done in her ear when she was a Weather Person on local news. They primed he with “factoids” for her to use.

if you have time, just pull up some Youtube videos of her interview with Katie and watch her struggle. it’s laughable.
Watch in the debate how she will redirect questions in order to bring up topics (clumsily) that they would like her to get in.
Also, notice that when biden was talking, she would occasionally be jotting things down. But they seemed disconnected to what Biden was saying. She even nodded a couple times as she wrote, when Biden wasn’t even talking.
Look I started this thing off wondering about what was that thing I saw in front of her ear during the dabate. That’s all. But I researched it and found that there was more to it than just that..
If you have a chance, take a brief look at those videos on Youtube now that we have talked about it, and I think you will at least see what I am talking about wether or not you agree.
