Seated across the desk in the intake assessment office of Binder and Binder, the large eyed woman was cheerful and pleasant while she proficiently processed my claim. We had gone thru the small talk and the statistics and the “personal” story that she related to me about a friend who found themselves in the same position I was in. We talked about my first job, at 14, and hers as well, and how it was a shame that when one finds one’s self in a situation like this after nearly 30 years of paying into SSI, it is almost impossible to get the help they need. Her friend’s case was finally accepted after 3 years of litigation. It was only her family that kept her from starving to death in the mean time. Read the rest of this entry »

Stop the presses! Hold all other stories! Everything else on the back-burner! Alberto Gonzales lied to Congress! Perjury and obstruction of justice to follow! The inevitable “he’s still my man” news cycle from Bush and then the “surprise” firing. Speculations will abound about who the replacement will be, as Congress files charges against the long time protector of the Bush family’s most recent dirty laundry. Then it goes into trial and testimony and then the new “revelations” and more testimony. Then we look forward to deliberations and the possible consequences of the different outcomes and the historical precedents for all the expert CNN commentators. Then the Verdict! Yea! Guilty! And then we get the sentencing and the appeals and then…. It’s Dec. 2008, and Alberto Gonzales gets his pardon.

In the Progressive/Liberal movements (Hillary can be goggled for the difference) there are many divisions in the ranks that split these camps and in so doing, fracture their combined strengths and weaken their respective calls for action. Differences based on ideological, economic, and even faith-based issues within the “party” are natural and healthy for a truly democratic process. Since there are way too many of these sticking points for any reasonable blogger to address in one article, I will focus on the one that is perhaps the most divisive and dangerous to our cause. There has been a new Executive Order quietly issued by the White House entitled “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq” which, not only has the potential to do extensive damage to the freedoms and protections guaranteed us in the Constitution, but may in fact be the last illegal weapon this administration needs to bring to their tyrannical-rule tactics from Iraq to our shores at home. I like hospitals. And now I know why.
Yesterday I had an appointment with the Doctor and after answering a few questions honestly (learned my lesson) it was off to the hospital for me. I won’t bore you with the details except for the fact that there was talk of putting a filter in one of my veins and all I could think of is the filter that keeps getting clogged on the lawn mower and I have to scrape off the oil residue to keep it running. Great; I’m going to be looking for a flat head screwdriver every time I’m short of breath. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s 10:00 am on the day the Senate failed to advance legislation to set a time table for withdrawal of US Troops from Iraq, because the Republican minority held their breath and stomped their feet and filibustered all night to keep the American People’s wishes from being done. Through out the country, corporations and special interest groups are writing the laws that affect our lives. On local, state, and federal levels these organizations are remaking the rules by which we live and govern our everyday activities, to benefit themselves. They have found the glitch in the security system, the unlocked bathroom window if you will, and they have crawled in and now claim squatters rights as if it were the intention of the founding fathers to hand over our Constitutional Democracy to insurance companies and global banking conglomerates.
